My Coshocton Story: Mark Fortune

April 9, 2018

At Hasseman Brewing, we are proud of Coshocton County.  We are proud of the history and heritage...and we are proud of the people.  On this new blog series "My Coshocton Story," we highlight local entrepreneurs, leaders and citizens.  We get to hear their "Coshocton Story" from them.

Today on "My Coshocton Story," we get to meet Mark Fortune.  Mark is the owner and operator of the Coshocton County Beacon.

1.  Tell us your name and organization.

Mark Fortune, Good Fortune Advertising LLC, dba The Coshocton County Beacon

2.  Why do you live/work in Coshocton County?

This is my home and a great place to raise a family, live and work. We lived away for ten years and moved back (my wife and I with our two children) for family reasons. My wife’s mom had cancer and we decided that we wanted our children to learn from, and spend time with, their grandparents. Here’s the kicker. We moved back in faith without a job. It has all worked out for the best and was overall, one of the most challenging, yet most rewarding decisions of our life. Coshocton County has been good to us and I feel blessed to live in such a wonderful place.

Why work and live here? I know the people here, we are all supportive and encouraging of one another. We believe in each other. We help each other. We work hard and care about our community. We are really just a big family. And like any family, we have some disagreements from time to time. But at the root of all that, I would go so far as to say that we really do love and care about each other. At the root of all this is a strong faith based community that understands how to help others. All of these things are what makes Coshocton County a very special place.

3.  What do you think the best thing is about the community?

That we care about the people and organizations that make our community great. We dig in to help others when needed, whether it is the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, or a cause that we all care deeply about. The people make Coshocton County great. They are special.

4.  What is your favorite event or attraction in Coshocton County…and why?

Easy one. The Coshocton County Fair. While it is exhausting and fun all at the same time from a media perspective it brings back so many great and fond memories of my childhood when I exhibited Black Angus steers (or my spending hours and hours in the arcade!) or our own kids showing market lambs. The people that participate in the county fair are some of the best people you could ever know. And it happens at our most gorgeous time of the year – which is an added bonus!

5.  Why would you recommend Coshocton County as a place to work or live?

Do you want to live in a community where you can make a difference? This is the place for you. Because of our smaller size, each person can bring their area of expertise, ideas and creativity to the forefront and really feel that they are making a difference. Because they are. Whether it is through a keen volunteer spirit, being an entrepreneur, or community involvement on a board or in an organization like the Lions, Rotary or Kiwanis, the opportunities to serve are numerous and you can see the impact of your contribution on a daily basis.

6.  Do you have any funny/interesting story about what brought you (or brought you back) to Coshocton?

Well, it was during our drive back to North Carolina after Christmas that we decided to return home. We just said it, and then made it happen the next fall – at fair time actually. We sold our home, I lived with some friends for a month or more while my wife and kids were here. Granted, they lived next to my wife’s parents so that’s a good thing. We drove the moving truck ourselves! Driving through the mountains on I-77 with a large moving truck was kind of fun!! But I wouldn’t want to do it again. As my father told me once, “It’s nice to go away Markie, but it’s always good to be home”. And we are home.

At Hasseman Brewing, we want to be the place that great people come with great friends to have great beer.  We want to be a place that people gather to discuss important topics...and have fun.  Real beer.  Real fun.  Real people.
